‘Memory of PasargadeTo separate the Light from the silenceAnd the light from the calm’fragment from a poem by George Seferis

The funerary monument form of this work draws its structure from what is believed to be the mausoleum of Cyrus the Great (559-530BC) in Pasargadae, the former capital of the Achaemenid Empire in Persia…Twombly’s version is cursorily assembled from a crudely whitewashed trapezoidal wooden box, forming a truncated pyramid, mounted by a smaller square box made of wood and topped off with a smaller square piece of stone. Twombly’s stele structure, made from remnants and found fragments, unified with a coat of white paint [‘White paint is my marble’, said he], rescues these gleaned objects from obsolescence. turning the whole into a monument that belies the ephemeral and quotidian parts of its construction.’
